David Schulte and Michael Blackwell did a fine job at the control desk. As usual the results are posted on the "League" page and there is a link to the USATT League page for individual match results. For upcoming Leagues Joola USA has agreed to a sponsorship and will supply the match balls. Our next League /Ladder will be Saturday, April 26, 2014. At this time no league tournaments are scheduled during May as we do not have Saturday access to the ballroom.
Any non-member is welcome to participate in our League Tournaments. As reported by the Phoenix Table Tennis Club we sadly pass on the news of a loss in our table tennis family: "We have very sad news that many of you perhaps have already heard. This last Sunday (Feb. 23rd), we lost Bo Karlsson. While I didn't know Bo well, I did speak with him often when he would regularly come down from Prescott to play in our tournaments. He was a great guy and I was always happy to see him as a regular participant in our PTTC tournaments. I will miss his presence. If you knew Bo and would like to express your feelings about him to his family, you can send a card or note to them at: Bo Karlsson Family 2305 Woodland Hills Drive Prescott, Arizona 86305" Bo Karlsson, at Tucson Table Tennis Club, Armory Park, 10-19-2013Congratulations to Lev Vays, finalist in the U1500 event at the AZ Open played in Phoenix on Sunday, February 16th. Sadly no other Tucson Table Tennis Club members medalled. Notable in the Giant Round Robin played on Saturday, February 15th, Ken Holman emerged from the B Group losing in the semi-finals to the eventual winner.

New Equipment
The club has recently purchased 4 top of the line Joola 3000SC tables. Unfortunately 2 arrived damaged and at this time only 2 are in use. We should have the other 2 tables playable very soon. We also have and are using 8 new Joola WM Net Sets and 10 Joola vinyl/steel barriers. Playing time at another facility In that table and barrier storage space at the Armory is limited we will be placing 4 of our older tables at the Santa Rosa Neighborhood Center on 10th Ave just North of 22nd St. Our use time will be limited to weekday mornings to early afternoon. Because this is a Parks and Rec facility a Senior Activity Card , paying the daily fee ( $1.50 ), or purchasing a quarterly / annual pass will be necessary for admission. More specifics will be announced as the program develops. League tournaments We had a very good turn out for the Jan 25 th league tournament. We would like to have more league tournaments but unfortunately playing space and time is limited at the Armory ( we need to be out of the ballroom by 1 PM ) which leads to incomplete matches when we have many players. In order to expedite play and have a well run event we will have to post and enforce some ridged guidelines. These will be posted and announced when completed. Congratulations to Adam Block Adam, astrophotographer supreme and one of our very good tt players, will have an exhibition at the Tucson Desert Art Museum. Check out the sponsor column on the right side of this page. The Tucson Table Tennis Club was well represented at last weekends tournament in Phoenix.
Congratulations to Kamran Salek for taking first place in the U-1875. Robert Bryant was second in the U-2000 event and Ken Girton and Jerry Sbarra took first place in the U-3200 Doubles. Ken Girton also took second place in the Over 60 and the U-1500 events. Lev Vays, Adam Block, Doug Bakke, Pouye Khoshkhoosani and Daphne Dok all played very well and won their share and had some very close matches. Good job TTTC! The next Phoenix Tournament is the 2014 Arizona Open on February 15th and 16th 2014. On Nov 30, 2013 Jeremiah Sbarra stepped down from the presidency. He will remain on the Board as a Director-at- Large. Jake Hill is now President and John Gee will become Treasurer. Mike Blackwell remains as Secretary and Kamran Saleck remains as Director-at-Large.
To:
Roger Baldner, for all his time and effort in repairing some of out tables. He painstakingly re-drilled and replaced underside brackets to bring most of the tables back to level at the net end. All this plus his pleasant sunny disposition. Roman Mazek for offering his time and some materials for any further table repair. Jack Cox who so expeditiously posted our league tournaments online at the USATT League Site. Along with Roger he also coordinated many of our league tournaments. Mike Blackwell and David Schulte who stepped up to coordinate future league and hopefully other tournaments. Robin, Alfredo, and Jerry of the Armory staff who arrange time slots and who are always willing to try and work with us to get playing time. The TTTC members who have been cooperative in setting up and taking down the table and barriers before and after our practice sessions and tournaments. The accomplished TTTC members who give up some of their playing time to help the less skilled among us improve our games. Happy Thanksgiving. Once again the Tucson Table Tennis Senior Olympics will be held at the Armory on Friday Jan. 31, 2013. In mutual cooperation with Parks and Rec they will be using our equipment. Their personel are usually unfamiliar with running a table tennis tournament so long term member Cyril "Mik" Mikula has volunteered to help coordinate and set up the tournament. Thanks "Mik".
Lately, we have had an inordinate number of guests using our facilities. Guests are always welcome and will be allowed to play at no charge for up to two sessions. Thereafter, there will be a modest fee required. Please direct any guest to our bulletin board where the fees are posted.
As noted on the calendar, there will be no practice session Monday Nov. 11, 2013 as the Armory will be closed for Veterans Day. We will have a makeup day on the following Tuesday Nov. 12. from 9AM to 1PM.
The Wednesday, October 16, 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm session has been cancelled. The Armory is setting up for their Health Fair. Soon we will be setting up an email distribution list of our members to expedite this type of announcement.
Please note the Armory will remain open for practice/play on Monday, October 14th Columbus Day. However, the ballroom will not be available to us on Thursday October 17th. We will have a regular session (9:00 am - 1:00 pm ) on the following Friday, October 18th. There are no changes to the Wednesday and Saturday sessions.
Furthermore, we have been given a tentative schedule as to when we may use the full ballroom for the Saturday 9:00 am - 1:00 pm sessions. Beginning in November we will have at least one and frequently two sessions per month through April 2014. When we can confirm the dates definitively we will post them on our calendar. The dining room remains our default playing area on all other Saturdays and we may use it until 4:00 pm. Congratulations to members Lev Vays and Miguel Noguera for their performances in the Phoenix TTC Best of the West Open on 9/28/2013. Miguel took 1st place in the Giant RR Group D and Lev was 2nd in the over 60 event. The next Phoenix TTC event will be the Valley of the Sun Open on Dec. 7th and 8th.
We would also like to congratulate Claudia McLean, our Canadian winter member, who won the Mixed Doubles in the 2013 Vancouver Island Championships, played in Victoria BC on September 29th. No, Ken was not her partner - he was chained to the control desk. She also was a finalist in the Women's Doubles Event. Nice going Claudia, we'll see you in November. Along with the new board of directors the Tucson Table tennis Club welcomes a fresh new web site under the capable guidance of one of our members Ken Holman. Ken, hails from Vancouver Island, Canada where he has been very involved in organizing table tennis clubs and tournaments . He graciously accepted our request to initiate a new website. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Hugh Owen for his efforts in starting and maintaining our web site for the past several years. Hugh has recently moved to Phoenix.
As of this date the new site is in the early formative stages and we welcome any input and suggestions from our members. Along with the new website we will endeavor to keep a current up to date email distribution list to keep the membership advised of schedules, tournaments, etc. The Tucson Table Tennis Club elected a new slate of board members. They are Michael Blackwell, John Gee, Jake HIll, Kamran Salek and Jeremiah Sbarra.
The new board would like to thank Gerard Anderson and Roger Baldner for their guidance over the previous 3 years as we look forward to continued growth of our club. The main objective of the Board will be to follow the guidelines of our constitution and encourage communication among all of our members. The board members contact information can be found under the Contact Us tab. All members are welcome to attend board meetings and your input and suggestions are encouraged. |
